“A red apple cannot be both a (totally) red apple and a (totally)green apple at the same time.”
A red apple cannot be both a (totally) red apple and a (totally)green apple at the same time. It remains itself as a red apple and cannot simultaneously be a different color.“Each thing is what it is and can’t be both itself and something else at the same time.”“A leopard cannot change its spots.”
One example of the law of identity being used in the Christian Bible is in Exodus 3:14, where God reveals His name to Moses as “I AM WHO I AM”. This name expresses God’s self-existence, and unchangablity. God is not defined by anything other than Himself, and He does not change or depend on anything else. He (Jesus) is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
Another example of the law of identity being used in the Christian Bible is in John 14:6, where Jesus declares, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus is not one among many ways, truths, or lives, but He is the only path to God, understanding, and source of life.
These are just two examples of the law of identity being used in the Christian Bible, but there are many more.
- 1 John 4:8 (NIV): “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
- Luke 18:19 (NIV) “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.
- John 4:24 (NIV): “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
- Hebrews 12:29 (NIV): “for our ‘God is a consuming fire.'”
**Law of Identity:** This principle asserts that each thing is identical with itself. It helps readers discern truth by ensuring that a statement maintains consistency and coherence. For example, if a statement contradicts itself or violates the law of identity (e.g., “A is not A”), readers can identify it as logically flawed.
Informal statements that are in essence the Law of Identity:
1. “What You See Is What You Get”
2. “It is what it is”
Examples of common mistakes in obeying the Law of Identity.
If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, is it still a tree?
- Misplacing Items: Misplacing an item like car keys in a drawer with office supplies and then believing that they have transformed into office supplies. The keys retain their identity and purpose as keys despite being surrounded by different objects.
- Food Labeling: Placing a carton of milk in the refrigerator door where condiments are stored and then mistakenly thinking that the milk has transformed into a condiment. The milk maintains its identity as a beverage despite its proximity to condiments.
- Book Categorization: Putting a science fiction novel on a bookshelf with textbooks and then assuming that the novel has become a textbook. The novel retains its identity as a work of fiction meant for entertainment, despite being stored among educational materials.
- Clothing Organization: Placing a pair of sneakers in a closet with dress shoes and then mistakenly thinking that the sneakers have transformed into formal footwear. The sneakers maintain their identity as casual shoes for athletic activities, despite being stored alongside dressier options.
In each of these examples, the object or phenomenon maintains its identity despite changes in its physcial surroundings.
Just because you say it ,it does not make it true. A persons language cannot violate the Law of Identity in “thinking straight” and still be true. The Law of Identity states that something cannot both be and not be the same thing at the same time and in the same respect.
Can You Think so that you Don’t Lie to Yourself? Think Straight by obeying the Law of Identity.
Here forward we will use the term thinking straight for (logical reasoning) because the term will ,hopefully, be more understandable to people. So, when you see thinking straight, think logical reasoning.
Statements are evaluated based on their truth value, which is determined by whether they accurately represent reality. If a statement violates the Law of Identity by mentioning contradictory or self-contradictory information, it cannot be considered true according to how people think straight.
For example, if someone were to say, “This apple is both (completely) red and not red,” they would be violating the Law of Identity because they are claiming that the apple is simultaneously two different states—red and not red. Such a statement cannot be true because it does not accurately reflect the reality of the situation.
In “thinking straight”, truth is predicated on consistency, and sticking to logical principles such as the Law of Identity. Therefore, a statement that violates this law cannot be considered true in the context of “thinking straight”.
Here are some Tricky situations that violate the Law of Identity:
1. **Chameleon Changing Color:** A chameleon is known for its ability to change color to blend in with its surroundings. In this case, the chameleon’s identity as a specific color is not consistent but changes based on external factors, violating the Law of Identity in the sense of visual perception.
2. **Scented Candle:** A scented candle labeled as “vanilla” might emit a scent that doesn’t accurately match its description. In this case, the candle’s identity as a vanilla-scented product is violated by its actual odor, which may differ.
3. **Mirage:** In a desert environment, a mirage may appear, creating the illusion of water or objects that are not actually present. In this case, the mirage’s identity as a real body of water or object is violated by its deceptive appearance.
4. **Synthetic Food Additives:** Some artificial flavors or colors used in food products may mimic natural substances but lack the same chemical composition or properties. For example, an artificial strawberry flavoring might not accurately replicate the taste of real strawberries, violating the Law of Identity in taste perception.
5. **Impersonation:** In a theatrical performance or costume party, an individual may dress up or act like someone else, temporarily assuming a different identity. In this case, the person’s identity as themselves is temporarily violated by the portrayal of another character.
In each of these examples, the violation of the Law of Identity occurs when the characteristics or properties of an object or phenomenon do not remain consistent or accurate, leading to shifts between perception and reality.
